About the program 

Health Economics and Big Data Analytics - HEBDA is a unique full-time Master’s dual studies program with a practical profile, conducted entirely in English.


Health Economics is a new but dynamically developing science. It is the discipline of economics applied to the topic of health care. Health Economics provides a set of methods and analytical approaches to study the effectiveness, efficiency and value of health technologies with the ultimate objective of optimal allocation of healthcare resources. The business world is currently undergoing a revolution due to the increasing importance of Big Data, and the healtcare sector is no exception. "The Economist" states, that not oil but data is the most valuable resource of the 21st century. More information on health economics, and big data: here. In the upcoming years it is anticipated that there will be a large demand for data researchers and specialists in the healtcare industry.

Unique aspects of the program 

  • The innovative system of education is based on the latest achievements in the field of health economics, and a practical component defined from the perspective of the patient, payer, healthcare provider,  pharmaceutical and medical devices manufacturers.
  • The aim of the program is for you to acquire expertise and skills in the area of big data analysis, with a particular focus on health data in the pharmaceutical and other related industries.
  • Among the teaching staff we will host visiting professors from leading foreign academic centers e.g. University of Ljubljana, Hochschule Neubrandenburg, University of Illinois, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Lund University, University of York.
  • Almost 75% of the tuiton fee is covered by EU funds.

Practical aspects of the program 

  • The HEBDA program has a unique practical nature - the program is conducted in the form of practical classes/workshops carried out at the University, and a 6-month internship conducted with leading employers in the  pharmaceutical and medical industries. Thanks to this, you will have access to the latest analytical and practical techniques, and the most commonly used solutions.
  • The employers are actively participating in the creation the program of studies, starting from the recruitment of candidates to the defence of the Master's thesis.
  • The program includes study visits: a visit to the Research & Development departments of innovative enterprises, including a pharmaceutical company and a manufacturer of medical devices, followed by visits to the Health Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Health.
  • There will also be two foreign study visits: to the European Parliament and to the EMA – the European Medicines Agency in Amsterdam.

THE LEADER OF THE PROGRAM IS PROF. KATARZYNA KOLASA, PHD, who has more than 20 years of academic and occupational experience in the healthcare sector. In the past, she worked at both global and regional Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR) functions at AstraZeneca and BiogenIdec being based in Sweden and Switzerland respectively. At Bristol Myers Squibb and Lundbeck she was leading Market Access teams in Central Eastern European (CEE) and Nordic Region. Her practical skills in the field of health economics were developed during six years em-ployment contract at the Kalmar County Council in Sweden as well.

Get to know the leader of the program

For the last four years, Prof. Katarzyna Kolasa,PhD has been developing experience with the pricing & reimbursement challenges in the field of medical devices. Since 2016, Katarzyna has been represent-ing Straub Medical as Global Market Access Lead being the External Principal Consultant for that Swiss family owned company. Before that, Katarzyna was employed as a Senior HEOR Director at GE Healthcare.

She holds a PhD degree in health economics and is an author of almost 40 scientific IF publications in the field of health technology assessment and pharmacoeconomics. Katarzyna Kolasa reviews manuscripts submitted to such prestigious journals as Health Policy, Value in Health, Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research, International Journal for Equity in Health and International Journal of Technology Assessment.

Her extensive knowledge in the field of health economics was acquired at University of York, University of Lund, and University of Bergen as well as during International Doc-toral Courses in Health Economics and Policy organized by the Swiss School of Public Health.

Prof. Kolasa heads the Health Economics & Healthcare Management Division (HeM) at the Kozminski University. She is the leader of the International Master Program Health Economics & Big Data at the Kozminski University financed by the research grant of the National Center for Research and Development which was listed as the best project in the POWER 2018 call. HeM Division vision is to become the leading research center in Poland in the field of digital health in Europe. It collaborates closely with health economics partners from the University of Lund, the University of Athens, University of Illinois, University of York and the University of Applied Science in Berlin.

Prof. Kolasa was nominated by the Ministry of Science to represent Poland in the COST Action CA17117, COST Association „Towards an International Network for Evidence-based Research in Clinical Health Research”. Since January 2019, she is co-chair of Global Special Interest Group for Digital Health establish at ISPOR.

During the course of your studies you will acquire knowledge, skills and social competences, e.g. in the following:

  • functioning of markets and economic entities in the area of health care on a microeconomic, macroeconomic, regional, global and international scale, including the internal market of the European Union.
  • the structure and institutional links in the social security and health care sectors, as well as economic entities operating within them.
  • understanding of the role of the health economics in the organisation of the healthcare system
  • advanced statistical methods for big data analysis
  • forecasting and modelling of economic processes with the use of predictive modelling and decision algorithms, including e.g. building a treatment effectiveness model for health technologies
  • interpretation of the economic law regulations, and analysis of the legal environment of entities operating in the field of health protection
  • evaluation of the profitability of introducing new innovative solutions to the market by economic entities
  • analysing the impact of national health policies using statistical tools, including data on open and closed treatment
  • analysing for data research scientists in the field of pharmacy, medical devices, healthcare insurance and digital health
  • acquiring and analysing data for the needs of sales and marketing departments of entities providing healthcare services (including digital services), pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers and insurance companies

Classes take place from Monday to Friday in the morning and in the afternoon.

Admission requirements 

Admission for the Program is based on a written exam (online test). Candidates with the highest score will be qualified.

Required documents 

Application must include:

  • application form - complete the form online, print and sign
  • original Bachelor/Master degree diploma or notarized copy and transcript of records
  • 1 signed passport photograph
  • copy of the national ID or a passport 
  • CV in English
  • proof of payment of the admission fee (non-refundable)
  • certificate confirming proficiency in English (you can be exempted from submitting an English proficiency certificate only if your High School Diploma confirms that English was your only language of instruction or English is your mother tongue) - e.g. FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC, CEIBT issued by the University of Cambridge; IELTS (>=6.0 points); TOEFL IBT (>=87 points); TOEIC (at least 700 points from the test); LCCI (English for Business level 2, 3, 4); London Test of English certificates (PEARSON) - level 3, 4, 5 (certificates Edexcel). 
  • Polish citizens citizens who did their previous studies in English or who scored at least 95% on the basic level or 80% in the extended level from English Language at the Polish Matura can be excluded from submitting an English proficiency certificate.

All documents issued in foreign languages should be translated into Polish or English by a sworn translator. The application must be complete in order to be qualified for the entry test.

Candidates from foreign countries 

Foreigners who need a visa to study in Poland are additionally required to make payment of tuition for one full year of studies before we can issue documents necessary in the visa application process i.e. invitation to come to Poland and the admission decision. Admission commission issues a conditional acceptance letter including individual account number to which the payment should be transferred in Polish Złoty (PLN) calculated according to the exchange rates of the National Bank of Poland (www.nbp.pl). In case the candidate is denied a visa tuition is returned. Admission fee is non-refundable.
