This year Kozminski University is celebrating its 30th anniversary under the motto “A New School for a New World”. These words summarize the spirit that has been guiding us since the beginning including a dream of creating a world-class business school in the heart of Europe, a mission to prepare future generations for the challenges of a changing world, to promote sustainable development, ethical leadership, and technological progress, and finally strong fundaments knowledge and wisdom in action, in decision making, in managing the university.

At Kozminski University, we take immense pride in fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment that encourages cutting-edge research and academic growth. Welcome Message from the Director of KUDoS

Dear Doctoral Students, I am looking forward to working with you as you embark on your journey of scientific discovery. I am convinced that you will feel welcomed in our supportive academic community and leverage the unique experience that we offer to foster a great academic career.

As the Director of the Kozminski University Doctoral School (KUDoS), I am committed to providing you with the support and resources needed to excel in your research and academic pursuits. Our institution is relatively your but already has a rich tradition of nurturing intellectual curiosity and academic excellence in the fields of business, finance and economics and law. I have no doubt that you will become a part of this legacy.

Throughout your doctoral studies, you will have the opportunity to engage with accomplished member of academic community including our faculty members, supervisors, and guest speakers from all over the world. You will have chance to collaborate in groundbreaking research projects and have plenty of opportunities present your work at conferences and seminars. Our interdisciplinary approach and strong business orientation encourages you to explore innovative solutions to complex challenges and witness the impact of research in the real world.

While you immerse yourself in doctoral studies I would like you to remember that the Doctoral School is not just about academic growth but first and foremost about personal development. What is KUDoS?

Kozminski University Doctoral School (KUDoS) is an academic community dedicated to development of young academics and characterized by interdisciplinary, internationalization and strong business orientation. Even though, like all Doctoral Schools in Poland, it is relatively young it draws from years of experience in doctoral studies at Kozminski University.

History of Doctoral Studies at KU

KU has received PhD granting rights for the first time already in 1998 in the discipline of Management. Subsequently, as the University grew it obtained PhD granting rights in economics (2008), law (2009), sociology (2013), and finance (2013). Since 2004 KU began offering a doctoral program in Management in Polish and since 2010 also in English and since 2012 in Economics and Finance. Over the years doctoral studies have been attended by hundreds of students and dozens of them obtained PhD degrees in the fields of Business, Economics and Finance and Law. Majority of our alumni work in business where they apply their scientific knowledge in practice where they are a testament to KU’s strong business connection.

The establishment of KUDoS

In 2019 KU has introduced a new framework of “Doctoral School” in accordance with new Law of Higher Education, which replaced all previous PhD programs. The new program is offered only in English, it is interdisciplinary and focused on methodology rather than disciplines and awards progressively increasing scholarship. The main goal of KUDoS is to develop young scholars for the world of international academia by the means of extensive publishing, participation in scientific events and teaching activities. This year, after 5 years of operation, KUDoS is on the verge of having first alumni and we are eager to see them succeed.

The meaning of KUDoS and its logo

The idea for the name KUDoS came, as it should, from our community. During the 2023/2024 opening seminar the group of 1st year students came with this ingenious abbreviation. The name immediately stuck as the term “KUDOS” signifying acclaim or praise, aptly embodies the recognition and esteem associated with attaining the highest academic achievement. As an integral part of Kozminski University KUDoS is represented in its logo that features university symbol an iconic ship sailing westwards. In the context of doctoral studies this ship symbolizes research as a journey of discovery in the course of which we aim to explore new landscapes and horizons of science. The ship also symbolizes teamwork and a community of practice, disciplined and focused on reaching their objectives. Together with KU motto “A New School for a New World” and the name KUDoS constitutes a perfect combination symbolizing our values and aspirations.

KUDoS Administrative Team is there to support and facilitate Doctoral Students in their academic journey. Activities of the administrative team are overseen by a Doctoral School Board.

As of 2024 KUDoS administrative team consists of 5 people each with their own scope of responsibilities and specializations. The role of the Director of Doctoral School is to implement strategic initiatives, ongoing assessment and improvement of quality of the current activities, regular communication and processing of formal applications. The role of Head of Doctoral School & Scientific Promotion Office in ongoing administrative coordination of core KUDoS processes including recruitment, scheduling of courses and activities, mid-term assessments, organization of doctoral procedures and scientific promotions. The role of Coordinator for Implementation Doctorate Program is ongoing management of the program including passing on core information, recruitment of new candidates, and coordination of the reporting related to the program. The role of Communication support officer is to collect and distribute key information using social media and websites. The role of the Administrative support officer is to collect, digitize and organize key documentation related to each student and operation of the doctoral school.

The Doctoral School Board is an essential governance body, consisting of the Director of the Doctoral School, who serves as the Chair, and up to six academic teachers appointed by the Rector. The Board plays a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction and operational principles of the Doctoral School. Its responsibilities include developing and monitoring the School's development strategy, ensuring the high quality of both the doctoral education process and the dissertations prepared by doctoral candidates. The Board also provides opinions on the regulations of the School, oversees the quality of the recruitment process, and gives input on recruitment principles and criteria. Additionally, it weighs in on matters related to doctoral education, including educational programs and the qualifications of academic teachers in the School. The Board also advises on guidelines and standards for creating individual research plans for doctoral students and offers opinions on the procedures for mid-term evaluations. This structure ensures that the Doctoral School maintains high standards in both education and research, aligning with its strategic objectives.
