The importance of observational studies in the process of the AI technologies development

Complex ecosystems, such as the one consisting of microbiota and its host, have been notoriously hard to analyze in a way that allows for drawing meaningful conclusions. The ever-growing amount of data that can be generated from them makes traditional methods ever less capable of exploiting their full potential. That is why microbiome research more and more often resorts to artificial intelligence’s toolbox which offers a multidimensional approach allowing for efficient handling of microbial interactions in hard-to-address indications, shedding new light on the diagnosis or treatments.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to work with data of the best achievable quality to make AI algorithms able to achieve results bringing meaningful conclusions. That is why  Observational Studies are of the utmost importance in generating valuable data.

One of the projects being conducted in Ardigen is the development of Microbiome Biomarker Discovery Platform, which will allow the discovery of candidates for predictive biomarkers of microbiome origin. It is an in silico technology to predict the effectiveness of oncological therapies, in particular ICT (a-PD-1, CTLA-4) and chemotherapy. During the project, an Observational Study to obtain data from 530 cancer patients for training and clinical validation of AI-based technology will be conducted. The multitude of included indications will allow for the generalization of the tool for various indications. The technology will provide AI support for the drug development and implementation process.

During this webinar you will learn about:

  • collection and preparation of samples in an AI-friendly manner;
  • preprocessing of the collected data;
  • types of analyses that can be carried out using them;
  • example of the project that uses data from Observational Studies.

PhD Kaja Milanowska-Zabel

Dr. Kaja Milanowska-Zabel is a microbiome enthusiast and a bioinformatics researcher. Her personal and professional ambitions led her to exploit the importance of the microbiome in human health. In 2016, Kaja joined Ardigen and started research activities in the microbiome field, primarily in the area of oncology. In 2018, after becoming one-third of Ardigen’s management board, she took over a new position and the responsibility of the R&D projects. Kaja’s previous professional experience includes being the assistant professor at the Department of Molecular and Systems Biology, The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań, and the Department of Gene Expression at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań. Currently, Kaja is a General Director of a Microbiome Business Unit in which she puts all of her power, passion and belief that with an in-depth, data-science aid approach, we can make a difference by decoding the microbiome to help patients. Kaja is also broadening her knowledge in business by realising a curriculum in Executive MBA at Kozminski University in Warsaw.

Martyna Balawejder

Martyna Balawejder graduated in molecular biology from the Jagiellonian University, and during her studies, cell biology became her passion. In 2019, she joined Ardigen, starting her professional career as a CTA in the Clinical Operations team. Then she was promoted to the position of CRA in the observational research conducted by Ardigen. Clinical trials have opened up new possibilities for development and allowed to combine biological knowledge with clinical practice. She completed numerous courses and postgraduate studies in clinical trials at the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University. Currently, as a Clinical Project Manager, she leads the Clinical Operations team at Ardigen. She strongly believes that the use of advanced technologies can contribute to the improvement of treatment conditions for oncological patients. She is constantly trying to improve her competences and knowledge in the field of clinical trials.
