About the program

The purpose of studies

Kozminski University focuses and encourages students personal development specifically in business and legal area; therefore, we invite students from all around the world to take part in our International Summer School in Warsaw. The program aims to provide academic professional courses and additionally business and cultural activities. During time spent at our university and in the city will give a unique chance to all the participant to attend classes in one of the best business schools in Central-Eastern Europe and discover beauty of Warsaw.

LEGAL COURSE (40 hours, 6 ECTS) 1. EU Insurance Law Courses will be held on campus; attendance is mandatory.

BUSINESS COURSES 

1. Artificial Intelligence in Business (4 ECTS)

The course focuses on issues related to various sub-disciplines of artificial intelligence and their potential application in business planning and growing. The aforementioned AI disciplines include mainly big data analytics and machine learning (from classical approaches based on regression, SVMs, random forest and clustering to unsupervised learning and deep learning with particular focus on deep reinforcement procedures. Students will also gain more general picture of how Artificial Intelligence impacts Business Strategy.The discussion seminar will focus on training data scientific skills applied to business building and growth.

Professors: Prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska Leon Ciechanowski, PhD 2. Economic Intelligence in Times of Climate Change (4 ECTS)

This course aims at providing students with the use of economic intelligence as a tool for strategic business analysis in the context of climate change. It familiarizes students with methods of evaluating strategic business opportunities and environments based on three pillars of economic intelligence, such as:

- mastering of relevant information (predictive analytics & data mining); 

- economic security (protection of strategic economic assets), and

- influence analysis (impact scenarios).

Moreover, this class helps students understand the complex reality of economic interdependencies from both, country- , and firm-specific perspectives.

3. Sustainability Transition in Business (4 ECTS)

This course explores different possibilities of taking climate action to the next level. It is important to understand current trends and Innovative practices and sustainability transition. The key focus of this course is on the real business contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a promising way to cope with the tragedy of climate crisis. There is a shift in corporate practices from reactive attitude and passive compliance with societal expectations to more proactive engagement based on descriptive Innovation, particularly in climate sensitive industries like energy, construction, textile, or food production and distribution.

4. Data Visualization and Storytelling (4 ECTS)

Data visualisation and storytelling are becoming important skills in the data-driven economy. This course provides the basic theories, concepts, tools and techniques to build and influence the development of a successful data visualisation and storytelling capability to drive improved business intelligence and insights. Delivered through an interactive approach with a highly-visual content, participants of this course are exposed to basic topics of data, design, narrative and technology that powers compelling and action-oriented data visualisations and reports. Whether you are a young professional looking to advance in your current role, a seasoned professional wanting to transform your career potential or a university student seeking to gain a competitive edge in the job market, this course is your gateway to success.

5. Large Language Models in Finance (4 ECTS)

This course program focuses on Large Language Models and their applications in the field of finance. During five sessions of 4 hours each, participants will gain technical knowledge about these models, as well as practical skills in using the Hugging Face Transformers library in Python. The first session will introduce you to the world of Large Language Models and their applications in Finance, while the second session will focus on text data preparation. Session three will discuss adapting language models for financial tasks, and session four will focus on implementing these models in financial applications and ethical issues. The final session will touch on advanced topics such as model interpretability in Finance and future trends in natural language processing in Finance, ending with presentations and project discussions.

6. Importance of Cultural Differences in the Global Leadership (4 ECTS)

In an increasingly interconnected world, this course is aiming to the nuanced interplay of cultural differences in shaping effective leadership on a global scale. Participants will engage with contemporary theories of social capital and networking, essential for navigating the complexities of international business relations and organizational dynamics. The course emphasizes the critical role of cultural awareness in leadership succession, equipping students with the knowledge to understand and influence the factors that impact leadership in diverse environments. Through a blend of theoretical foundations and practical discussion seminars, participants will emerge with a refined skillset, poised to lead with cultural competence and drive successful outcomes across borders. This advanced module is a keystone for aspiring leaders who seek to leave an indelible mark on the global stage.

7. New Technologies in Finance (Blockchain. Bitcoin. Fintech) (4 ECTS)

The information age seems to shift the way businesses and people function to keep up with the ‘modern lifestyle’. Traditional banking based to large extent on relationship management. The new approach is to speed up processes, such as on-boarding, credit risk scoring, advisory services and product purchases, to increase the convenience of today’s customers by using automation and artificial intelligence. The recent development of technology, including Blockchain allows us to achieve these objectives. In our course we will discuss the above mentioned developments and propose where the future of financial institutions is heading.

LEGAL COURSE

1. EU Insurance Law (6 ECTS)

The course is to present to the students regulations regarding insurance industry at the EU level, including requirements that the insurers have to fulfill to operate in countries other than that in which they have their headquarters, how to establish an insurance undertaking, how to distribute insurance products and whether an agent can work as a broker. The course will also discuss matters related to the supervision of insurance companies and what it really means to be a regulated company. The course will try to answer numerous questions not only from the theoretical point of view but also practical – students will be presented with problems from the area of international insurance and their possible solutions. Not only will the students leave the course with the general knowledge about the insurance sector, but they will also be given a practical insight of the issues insurers can face and how the relevant regulations are actually applied in practice. The course will enable the students to implement the knowledge previously acquired during the introductory lectures through workshops and case studies.

Organization of classes

Classes take place from Monday till Friday. Weekends are free, so students to attend cultural activities organized by Kozminski International Society and/or explore city on their own.

Leading lecturers

Prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska-Skierkowska

Prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska holds the position of Vice-Rector responsible for International Cooperation and ESR and is also part of the MINDS (Management in Networked and Digital Societies) department at Kozminski University. She received a doctoral degree in the field of the philosophy of artificial intelligence at the University of Warsaw. She is a graduate of The New School for Social Research in New York, where she participated in research on identity in virtual reality, with special emphasis on Second Life. She received a scholarship from the Fulbright Foundation. She also worked during the Polish Presidency of the EU Council as chairwoman of the Audiovisual Working Party on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

In 2016, she has started a fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2021, she became a Research Fellow in the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER), and since 2022 is a Senior Research Associate at Harvard University as part of the Harvard Labour and Worklife Program.

Ph.D. Leon Ciechanowski

Leon Ciechanowski is a cognitive scientist, philosopher, culture science expert. He is a graduate of philosophical Studies in English and cultural studies at the University of Warsaw, and intercollegiate studies at the “Artes Liberales” Academy. Leon is working in the domain of human-computer interaction, Phenomenology, and a sense of agency/control. He is currently completing his Ph.D. in Psychology at the SWPS University and is involved in the study of chatbots, robots, and wearables in cooperation with MIT. He is also a consultant for various business sectors (banking, data analytics, telecommunication). In his spare time, Leon loves to popularize (neuro)science as a member of the “Brain!” foundation.

Professor of Corporate Sustainability Management. Head of Sustainability Transition at Kozminski University. Director of Positive Entrepreneurship Research Lab. Expert on circular economy, values-driven transformation, and sustainable entrepreneurship. Co-founder of Climate Leadership platform for business powered by UN Environment. The Associate Research Expert at SUSTBUSY Research Center Business & Society – Towards a Sustainable World at ESCP Europe and visiting professor at Audencia Business School.

Prof. Waldemar Karpa

Holding a PhD form University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, prof. Karpa's research interest embrace innovation markets, innovation policy, as well as climate change economics. As a lecturer, he values the real economy set-up in class and strives for an ever engaging student learning experience.

Antonio Grginović

Antonio is currently a PhD candidate at Kozmiński University wher he prepares the PhD thesis on climate finance. He has been professionally engaged in managing the energy sector in Poland, where he was actively participating in realization of complex business and technical endeavours on a daily basis. In addition to that, he has also been engaged in the development of the Polish innovation ecosystem on behalf of one of the major institutional player that created the very first pre-seed/seed financing and VC financing funds. Thus, his active business experience as well as solid academic background makes him prefectly suited for the applied part of the course.

Paweł Dudek

Business development and change management expert with a proven track record in various sectors, including professional services and international trade firms. Currently working as a consultant at Silfra Consulting and Gekko Advisory. Certified Advanced Trainer of the Prosci® change management methodology, one of only four individuals in Poland with this certification.

Paweł brings over 20 years of experience in market entry, realignment processes, leading change, and driving growth through the establishment of long-term client relationships and collaboration with regulatory bodies and local communities. His expertise spans multiple countries, including Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, and the U.K.

Since 2022, Paweł has been serving as an Organizational Change Manager (OCM), providing support to multinational corporations operating in robotics, power, and automation. From 2020 to 2022, he worked as an OCM with the world's largest biotech company. Prior to that, he spent two years (2018-2020) in Serbia, leading a project with a blockchain startup.

In the earlier stages of his career, Paweł held positions on the board of a venture capital company, served as CEO of a publicly-owned organization, and worked as a general manager for a market entry law firm that quickly gained recognition as one of the top 10 firms in Poland. Since 2016, he has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Warsaw, and since 2018 at Kozminski University.
Paweł is an alumnus of the Leadership Development Program (PLD11) at Harvard Business School, completing the program in 2010. In 2019, he successfully completed the Blockchain technologies program at MIT Sloan School of Management (Executive Education). He holds a Master of Philosophy degree.
 

Felipe Rego

Felipe Rego is a leading data science, analytics and data visualisation specialist. He develops analytics and data visualization solutions that help transform organizations. Felipe is also an global educator delivering practical and engaging training programs in data visualisation and storytelling, analytics and other data-related topics. Felipe holds an M.Phil. in Electrical and Information Engineering from the University of Sydney, is a certified Google Cloud Engineer, and served as an advisor to an Australian government department.

Prof. Juan F. Imbet

Juan F. Imbet is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Paris Dauphine – PSL University. He holds a Ph.D. cum laude in Finance from Pompeu Fabra University and he is the 2022 recipient of the prestigious PSL Junior Fellow. Before finishing his PhD, he was a visiting scholar at The Wharton School from the University of Pennsylvania. His main academic research focuses on the role of social media on investment decisions and financial stability, and the tax-evasion strategies of corporations. In the past, he has taught courses in computer science, asset pricing, and banking at the Barcelona School of Economics, ESADE, the University of Luxembourg, and Paris Dauphine.

Anna Tarasiuk

Anna Tarasiuk - attorney-at-law working on the insurance market since 1999. Anna is a private insurance law expert in the field of both: life and non-life insurance. She provides advisory services to financial institutions, including insurers, banks, insurance and financial intermediaries. Anna advises in relation to regulatory matters, cross-border services, distribution of insurance products, insurance contracts and bacassurance and affinity cooperation.

Katarzyna Malinowska
Prof. Katarzyna Malinowska

Professor of Kozminski University, attorney at law, expert in risk management and insurance, including space insurance. Author of at least several dozen publications on the above. Her main book concerns ‘Space insurance. International legal aspects’ (Kluwer Law International, 2017). The recent research concerns risk management and insurance of in-orbit-servicing ventures and suborbital flights. Frequent speaker at Polish and international academic and industry conferences. Head of the Centre for Space Studies at Kozminski University and leader of the postgraduate studies ‘Entrepreneurship in the space industry’. Expert at the Committee of the Enterprise Risk Management at International Astronautical Federation.

  • Complete your personal data and add all the required documents.

  • Submit your application until 1st of June.

    If you are a student from Germany interested in applying to DAAD scholarship, your application has to be submitted before 15th of April.

  • Wait until your application is reviewed – then you will be contacted by the program’s coordinator who will provide you with all the further details.

  • Pay for the participation in the program (700 EUR for students from KU’s partner universities; 900 EUR for students from non-partner universities; 800 EUR for DAAD scholars).

  • Choose courses, get to know their schedules, contents etc.

  • the scan of your ID/passport 

  • the Certificate/Confirmation of English proficiency (required at least B2 officially confirmed by your home university or certificate such as FCE, TOEFL, IELTS) unless English is your native language or it is the language of instruction at your home University (confirmation needs to be attached to the application directly).

Transporation

HOW TO GET TO THE UNIVERSITY FROM THE CHOPIN AIRPORT?

  • The journey should take you approximately 30-45 min. To the city center and 1h-1h 15 min. to Kozminski University.
  • The best way to get from the Chopin Airport  to the University is to take the bus 175 in front of the Airport Exit gates, and get off at the “CENTRUM” stop. When you get off from the bus, you will need to go underground to access the tram stop. Follow signs with trams of direction to Żoliborz.
  • Take tram 18 to ŻERAŃ FSO, get off at the stop “PIMOT”,  the university will be on your left side- a blue building.

Accommodation 

Kozminski University does not have on-campus accommodation. 

We recommend to participants to use portals such as booking.com and air bnb to look for short term rentals in Warsaw. Also you can use services of PepeHousing and spotahome.com where discounts which we have arranged for participants of ISS.

Cancellation fee

The cancellation fee is 25% of the fee applicable by the 5th June. Students from non- partner institutions receive 675 euro back, from partner institutions - 525 euro.  After the 5th June, no fees are refundable. 

Fees paid for the current summer cannot be transferred to the next year.
