Talent Returns to Warsaw

Research Project: Talent Returns to Warsaw

This study constitutes a further development of earlier research conducted within the framework of the Warsaw Talent Cluster project.

Project Description

The project focuses on the analysis of return migration and its significance for labour market development, with particular emphasis on Warsaw as the main hub for attracting talent in Poland. Its objective is to achieve a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving migrants’ return decisions, to identify the competencies they bring back, and to assess the impact of return migration on the local labour market, urban innovation, and economic competitiveness.

The project is embedded in the city’s strategic planning efforts, supporting the development of long-term labour market and talent policies, as well as initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining highly skilled workers.

Main Objectives of the Project

  • identification of typologies of return migrants and their educational and career trajectories,
  • analysis of the competencies, professional experience, and capital brought back by return migrants,
  • assessment of the impact of return migration on the Warsaw labour market, including the high-skills sector,
  • support for the development of evidence-based policy in the areas of labour market, education, and talent development,
  • strengthening the link between international mobility and career development.

Project Framework

The project is based on the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, empirical research, and close cooperation between the academic community and public administration. Particular attention is paid to the experiences of individuals returning from international migration and their integration into the local labour market. The project results in reports and recommendations supporting the development of public policies in the areas of talent and mobility.

What Is Return Migration?

Return migration refers to the process in which individuals who have previously migrated abroad decide to return to their country or city of origin. These returns go beyond physical relocation and involve the transfer of knowledge, competencies, professional experience, attitudes, and international networks.

Impact of Return Migration on the Labour Market and Talent

Return migration has a significant impact on the labour market, particularly in large urban centres such as Warsaw. Returning migrants often strengthen the talent segment by bringing unique skills, international work experience, and innovative approaches to work organisation. At the same time, their presence enhances labour market competitiveness, improves the quality of human capital, and supports the development of knowledge-intensive sectors.

In the context of Warsaw, return migration represents an important component of talent attraction and retention strategies, influencing labour market dynamics, the city’s economic development, and its position as a regional hub for innovation and professional careers.
