11.06.2025

A new book co-authored by Prof. Izabela Grabowska from Kozminski University, the University’s doctoral researcher Ivanna Kyliushyk, and Emil Chról – a researcher affiliated with the Center for Research on Social Change and Human Mobility (CRASH) – has just been published by the prestigious academic publisher Routledge. The title of the publication is "Ukrainian Female War Migrants: Mobilising Resources for Prospective Social Remittances" (2025).The book is part of the renowned Routledge Studies in Development, Displacement and Resettlement series and has been highly rated in the academic review process. It reflects the latest global research trends in migration, social policy, and refugee studies.

What is the book about? The publication explores the experiences of Ukrainian women who arrived in Poland following the outbreak of the full-scale war in 2022, seeking not only safety but also an opportunity to continue their lives and professional paths in a new environment. The authors analyze various forms of capital – social, human, psychological, and economic – that female war migrants bring with them and develop throughout their migration journey. Far from being viewed solely as refugees, these women are presented as active participants in integration processes and potential carriers of social remittances – ideas, norms, and practices that can contribute to the future reconstruction of Ukraine.

A unique research approach The book combines advanced statistical analysis (based on data collected from more than 340 migrants) with in-depth qualitative studies, offering a new perspective for researchers in migration, policy, social development, and gender studies,  practitioners and humanitarian organizations, policy-makers shaping the future of integration in Europe.

Kozminski University – the first support point In the book’s introduction, the authors highlight the role of Kozminski University as the first “one-stop-shop” reception point for refugees from Ukraine after the outbreak of war. The University’s academic community – including scholars and students – played an important role in providing assistance at a crucial moment in history.
