The European Commission has appointed Professor Dariusz Jemielniak to the Board of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). Prof Jemielniak, Vice President of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Professor at Kozminski University, has joined the team of experts managing the institute's strategic activities. He is the third person from Poland to take on this role. European Institute of Innovation & Technology is a European Union body whose main objective is to promote innovation and technological development in Europe. It was established in 2008 as part of an initiative to increase Europe's international competitiveness by combining three key elements: education, research and business. The main tasks of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology in the European Union:
- To actively support Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), bringing together businesses, academic and research institutions to create new products, services and start-ups and thus promote innovation.
- Analysis and support of education at different levels - mainly concerning masters and doctoral programmes focused on innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Investment in startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Institute offers not only financial support, but also mentoring, so that young companies are given the opportunity to develop and commercialise innovative ideas.
The new EIT Board members appointed by the European Commission are - in addition to Prof Dariusz Jemielniak - Prof Anne Borg (former Rector of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Kyriacos Kokkinos (former Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus), Anna Lindén (Chair of the Board of Innofactor, Vice-Chair of the Board of Åbo Akademi University) and Michel Mariton (Vice-Chair of Economic Development, Université Paris-Saclay). The European Institute of Innovation and Technology will continue its mission to support innovation and technology in Europe. The new members of the Council are tasked with strengthening innovation efforts and the competitiveness of the European economy.
