The Scientific Council of the TIGER Research Center for Transformation, Integration and Globalization, founded and led by Prof. Grzegorz W. Kołodko, has been operating at the Kozminski University since 2000 and is to be headed by Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize winner and the former President of East Timor. In 1996 Jose Ramos-Horta received the Nobel Peace Prize for more than 20 years of struggle for independence of East Timor, a former Portuguese colony occupied by Indonesia since 1975. Thanks to the Timorese people's fight, which cost tens of thousands of victims, and his diplomatic mission, with which he traveled worldwide, East Timor finally freed itself from Indonesia's occupation and has been an independent democratic republic since 2002. Jose Ramos-Horta studied law in the USA, was Foreign Minister in the first government and later Prime Minister and President of East Timor. He donated his Nobel Prize to a fund of micro-loans for the poor. Currently, he is involved in the activities of international organizations working for peace, human rights, democracy, and sustainable development, expressing the concerns of the world's poorest countries. He is the author of numerous books and essays, a visiting professor, and was awarded honorary doctorates by many universities. The participation of such a high-profile politician and a sensitive observer of the modern world in the TIGER Scientific Council broadens the perspective of research conducted within this scientific unit. The TIGER Scientific Council also includes professors: J. D. Agarwal (India), Abul Barkat (Bangladesh), Laszlo Csaba (Hungary), Bruno Dallago (Italy), Saul Estrin (Great Britain), Fan Gang (China), James Kenneth Galbraith (USA), Marian Gorynia (Poland), Hu Bilang (China), Elżbieta Mączyńska (Poland), Satoshi Mizobata (Japan), Alexander Nekipelov (Russia), Tatiana Rosito (Brazil), Irina Sikorskaya (Ukraine) and Vito Tanzi (USA)
