New Book on Ukrainian Female War Migration – Premiering in June

03.02.2025

On June 6, 2025, the prestigious publisher Routledge will release the book "Ukrainian Female War Migrants: Mobilising Resources for Prospective Social Remittances" by Prof. Izabela Grabowska, Ivanna Kyliushyk, and Emil Chról. This publication sheds new light on the experiences of Ukrainian women forced to flee their country following the escalation of war in February 2022.

The book explores the journeys of Ukrainian female war migrants in Poland, a country that initially served as a primary destination for Ukrainian labor migrants and has now become one of the largest hosts of refugees. The authors examine the diverse forms of capital—human, social, psychological, and economic—that these women bring with them and develop throughout their migration process. The research also delves into their participation in the labor market, mobilization of resources, and acquisition of new skills.

Beyond documenting this historic wave of migration, the book emphasizes the role of Ukrainian women in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. The authors argue that through their experiences abroad, these women can become key agents of change, transferring new ideas, norms, and social practices (so-called social remittances) back to their homeland.

A Unique Perspective and Research Significance

This publication integrates advanced statistical analyses (based on data from over 340 migrants) with in-depth qualitative research, making it an invaluable resource for:

  • Researchers in migration studies, security, politics, and sociology,
  • NGOs and humanitarian organizations supporting Ukrainian refugees,
  • Policy-makers developing strategies for migrant integration and support.

The First Reception Point for Refugees at Kozminski University One of the key aspects highlighted in the book is the role of Kozminski University, which established the first "one-stop" reception point for Ukrainian refugees. Within the university's walls, migrants received essential support at critical moments upon arriving in Poland, showcasing the academic community's crucial role in responding to the crisis.

This publication was written by a team of researchers from The Center for Research on Social Change and Human Mobility (CRASH) at Kozminski University:

  • Prof. Izabela Grabowska – Professor of Social Sciences, sociologist, economist, and Director of CRASH,
  • Ivanna Kyliushyk – PhD research fellow at Kozminski University,
  • Emil Chról – PhD candidate at the University of Warsaw and research assistant at CRASH.

The book is part of the prestigious series "Routledge Studies in Development, Displacement and Resettlement", highlighting its significance in global migration and refugee policy discussions.
