Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship

The Japanese Government Scholarship allows international students to pursue studies in Japan. The application process is conducted through Japanese embassies and consulates in each country or through Japanese higher education institutions.

The scholarship is fully funded by the Japanese government and does not require an application fee. Beware of organizations or individuals charging application fees, as they are not affiliated with the Japanese government.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be under 35 years old.
  • A completed university degree (or expected completion) or 16 years of formal education is required.
  • Japanese language proficiency is not mandatory, as some universities offer courses in English.
  • Applicants should have an interest in Japan and a willingness to deepen their understanding of the country.

Application Pathways

There are two main ways to apply for the MEXT Scholarship:

A. Embassy Recommendation

  • Candidates are recruited and initially screened by the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country.
  • Required documents and interviews are conducted by Japanese diplomatic missions.
  • Scholarship types may vary by country; candidates should check with the Japanese embassy for details.

B. University Recommendation

  • Japanese universities select scholarship candidates based on student exchange agreements with foreign institutions.
  • After internal screening, universities recommend candidates to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).
  • This pathway covers research students, undergraduate students, Japanese language and culture students, and technical college students.
  • Scholarship recipients typically arrive in Japan in September or October, with some arriving in March or April.
  • Not all universities can recommend students for MEXT scholarships, so applicants should check if their chosen university has available nomination slots.

Application Process

  1. Check Requirements – Visit the website of the Japanese embassy or the chosen university.
  2. Prepare Documents – Gather necessary forms, recommendation letters, and other attachments.
  3. Submit Application – Deadlines and details vary depending on the country and application pathway.
  4. Candidate Selection – Based on interviews and document reviews.
