We invite you to a lecture on "Does the gatekeeper role of the tech giants such as Apple, Google and Amazon break competition rules?". Examples from the UK, EU,  US and Japan will be used.

The lecture will be given by Dr Ruth Taplin, founder/editor of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Economics and Business Law (IJEBL) and director of the Centre for Japanese and East Asian Studies in London.

What will be  discussed is how tech giants allow app developers access to sell their products through their digital platforms app stores but give their own products preferential treatment however, overcharging non company app developers for access to wider markets while giving them unfair, less preferential access to their digital platforms.  How creator/developer intellectual property is often infringed during this process will be another aspect of this lecturer's focus. Legislation from the regions under scrutiny will be used to illustrate this issue. Professor Taplin will draw on her recent research as found in her latest books published by Routledge; Cyber Risk, Intellectual Property Theft and Cyberwarfare and Artificial Intelligence, Intellectual Property, Cyber Risk and Robotics.

Ruth Taplin holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a Graduate Diploma in Law. She is the Founder/Editor of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Economics and Business Law (IJEBL) and Director of the Centre for Japanese and East Asian Studies, London. As the first Routledge Featured Author in Asian Studies, she has written/edited 24 books and more than 200 articles in respected, refereed journals and has written many book chapters. She was a consultant to the Federation of Electronics Industry, UK for nine years and specialises in Intellectual Property Rights, Valuation, and Competition Law especially in East Asia.
