NEW PRAGMATISM VS. NEW NATIONALISM
REVISITED
which will be held on November 27, 2024. from 17:00 at our Academy in the Leon Kozminski Auditorium.
The debate will be moderated by Prof. Marian Gorynia UE in Poznań, President of PTE. Participating will be the authors of the book: Prof. Dr. Grzegorz W. Kołodko and Prof. Andrzej K. Kozminski , as well as Prof. Anna Baczyńska, ALK; ; Prof. Witold Morawski ALK , Prof. Jan Wiktor, EU in Krakow; Dr. Grzegorz Malinowski ALK .
The purpose of the debate is to discuss the changes that are still taking place and their implications for social policy and economics.
In 2016, "The Economist" used the term new nationalism as an ideology that fundamentally changes the basis of social and economic policies. The concept strips them of their scientific or even rational basis and replaces them with emotions centered around the notion of a nation's greatness, rebirth, and “getting up from its knees.” The primary threat is seen in immigration and migration in general. Nationalism opposes globalization and the functioning of supranational systems. Sovereignty, state ownership and big government programs are glorified.
In 2017, a book written in the form of a dialogue was published by Grzegorz W. Kołodko and Andrzej K. Koźminski, The New Pragmatism vs. the New Nationalism, in which the authors attempted a comparative analysis of the two doctrines and their relationship to each other. Since then, much has happened and fundamental changes have taken place, such as full-scale wars, pandemics with global reach, the AI revolution, and the victorious march to power in many important countries of political groupings that can be described as newly nationalist, national-socialist or even fascist. Professor Kołodko believes that modern social and economic policy should be conducted on the basis of a paradigm he calls the new pragmatism. Its most important features are: reliance on a scientific basis for interdisciplinary studies of society and the economy in a global context, eclectic use of the previous achievements of economics, denial of doctrinaireism, flexible adaptation of policies to changing conditions not only economic, but also social and political. Event conducted in Polish.
