Paper savings (through electronic exams, open access printers, setting printers for two-sided and black and white printing, paper waste management, we have reduced paper consumption by 30%; waste paper containers; bins for segregation in the corridors; in most bathrooms paper dispensers are fitted instead of a sleeve; glass boards instead of flipcharts appear in the halls)

Kozminski University bases its ecological activities on two pillars. On the one hand, it is education and on the other practice, but these activities overlap. We show students that we conduct real activities that have an impact on reducing our negative impact on the environment. We also involve our academic community (both employees and students) to undertake ecological activities on a smaller scale.

We focus our efforts on reducing paper consumption by introducing electronic exams, we already have some successes in this field (241 full-time lecturers save paper at around 31%, others employed on other principles i.e. 944 people, save paper at around 8%).

We also thought about reducing paper consumption by installing glass boards on the walls, which are ideal for conducting classes and at the same time are eco, for erasable markers. We have reduced the consumption of flipcharts with this idea. The IT department has set up our printers for double-sided printing, containers for segregated waste are set up in the corridors of the university, separately for paper. The bathrooms have dispensers for paper instead of a sleeve.

At Kozminski University, ecological issues are not forced, but some actions come naturally. The number of ecological activities increases with our greater awareness.

Plastic reduction (no plastic bottles at the KU; individual offices have glass pitchers, and glasses for drinking water; in all social rooms and the corridors we have drinking water saturators, which are freely available to employees and students; water distributors with paper cups, withdrawing from plastics and introducing reusable paper cups also for sub-people; we consume paper cups around 15K pieces per month, that's why promotional campaigns appeared encouraging to use the cup more than once; gave up plastic cups completely; ban on the use of plastic cutlery and straws at KU; encouraging to order beverages in their multiple bottles and cups; zero waste actions)

We don't buy or use plastic bottles at the University. All individual offices have glass pitchers and glasses for drinking water. We have drinking water saturators in all social rooms and corridors, which are made available to employees and students free of charge. We gave up plastic cups completely. We only order paper cups. On average, we consume such cups around 15K pieces per month, that's why promotional campaigns appeared encouraging to use the cup more than once.

We categorically decided that we give up plastic cutlery and straws that have a very negative impact on the environment. We see in many TV programs what happens with this type of waste that does not disappear but gets into the oceans and virtually everywhere.

Awareness alone pushes us for this type of action.

Energy savings (thermo efficiency improvement of buildings equates to reducing electricity consumption and reducing electricity bills, in the same time we emit less carbon dioxide; ventilation and air conditioning (possibility of creating internal air circulation in all rooms); automatic ventilation systems that detect the carbon dioxide content in rooms; KU also has fat separators so as not to discharge it into the sewage system; LED lighting replaced, which is to be successively in all rooms; Smart House system; automatic switches installed in some rooms so that the light goes out when the room is not in use at the moment, automation also adjusts the lighting to the amount of traffic in a given place, more and more rooms will be covered by such sensors and LED lighting)

As a conscious organization, we saw the need for broadly understood ecological activities, especially
in the case of the design of our University buildings. We assumed that we had to do more than just meet universally applicable standards, but we also wanted to make these buildings friendly to people who stay in them. We have made, among others whole thermo efficiency improvement  of the campus. This has reduced electricity consumption and reduced bills electricity and, on the other hand, caused us to emit less carbon dioxide. Ventilation and air conditioning (possibility of creating internal air circulation in all rooms).

In our activities, we also based on various types of research that show us the course of action. An example of such activities is e.g. awareness of the importance of access to light or air in the case of education, which is why the authorities are modernizing campus they opted for automatic ventilation systems that detect carbon dioxide content in rooms.

The university also introduces LED lighting. In some places, we used full automation so that the light goes out when the room is not in use at the moment. Automation also adjusts the lighting to the amount of traffic in a given place. We are constantly working to ensure that more and more rooms are covered by such sensors and LED lighting. This is standard in our newly built buildings. We are also trying to adapt such lighting in older buildings.

Green areas (planting 111 new trees, we sowed grass)Our University is very environmentally friendly. In consultation with the Praga Południe District Office, old stands that did not generate ecological benefits were removed. In return, we planted 94 new trees, including conifers and 12 decorative thujas.

In connection with our annual student holiday called „Kozminalia”, we decided to stop the fireworks show for the sake of neighboring municipal Zoo and animals living within our university area and firstly because of our Pro - Ecological approach for the environment we all share.

We try to make it not only healthy but also nice, which is why we constantly sow grass. Animals, insects as well as our eyes are pleased. Thanks to this, soil moisture is higher, and this helps to save water that we would use for watering.

This is also our thinking, a constant circle that closes in its cycle.

Encouragement to use soft or public transport (available city bikes; on the campus we have space for bicycle parking together with a bicycle shelter to make it easier to use private bicycles; information boards with tram timetable; carpooling platform, a station dedicated to electric cars (ALK car park) - 3 sockets)

A few years ago, students proposed that they want to travel to the University with Veturilo bicycles. There were no city bikes in our district at the time. We submitted the project in participatory budgets. The Rector has taken over the area belonging to us, where the Veturilo station was erected. Interest exceeded our expectations.

There are so many bikes now that they need to be attached to other bikes because more and more students are riding bikes to the University. This shows that students are using this solution and are strongly interested in it. We strive for further development in this trend. At the campus, we now have space for parking bicycles with a bicycle shelter to make it easier to use private bicycles.

Moving further towards eco, bearing in mind that students and lecturers are also car drivers, we have introduced electric car charging stations on campus. All kinds of technological innovations are very popular among our students. Many of them have hybrid and electric cars. We currently have 3 places for charging electric cars.

Additional matters (developmental 2020) 

- introducing Ecolabel certified paper, persuading employees to minimize printouts
We are constantly improving our activities, now we are changing ordinary printer paper to Ecological one. We are constantly making our employees aware and urging them to reduce the number of prints, we urge them for example to archive information in electronic form.

- use bottles and cups equals a discount on coffee if someone comes with their cup; refraining from ordering bottled water, the possibility of buying a glass bottle with a logo
In our gastronomic points, it is possible to buy reusable cups with the logo of the Kozminski University. This idea is largely a student initiative. They inspire us. We are grateful to the students that they stimulate us to many changes and they introduce them.

- sensors and LED lightning this is already standard in our newly built buildings, we are also trying to adapt such lighting in older buildings
As mentioned before, we are constantly improving our LED light network. We constantly work in older buildings of the University and introduce improvements that have a huge impact on environmental protection.

- Leg boxes for birds — giving birds a safe, secure place to raise their young, and allowing us to watch unfold without disturbing them (Special Protection Areas)
Guarding our environment, caring for our surroundings, we installed booths and bird feeders. The natural environment of some species is decreasing, so we decided to support our fauna. At the same time, our students can observe beautiful nature and participate in environmental projects.
Our University is located in the Natura 2000 area, which also obliges us to comply with certain standards and principles. Natura 2000 areas are the youngest form of nature protection, introduced in 2004 in Poland as one of the obligations related to accession to the European Union. Natura 2000 sites are created in all member states creating the European Ecological Network Natura 2000. The goal is to protect about 200 of the most valuable and endangered natural habitats and over 1000 rare and endangered species. The uniqueness of this form of nature protection lies in the fact that member states create a network based on the same assumptions set out in the law and guidelines of the European Union, manage it using similar instruments, jointly take care of the appropriate financial resources and its promotion.

Besides, we would like to collect rainwater to water our areas. We now have automatic irrigation systems, but we know that there is a special rainwater filtration system. Also, we would like to build a pool to collect rainwater, but it depends on the potential location of subsequent buildings belonging to the University, this idea is also in the design phase.

- replacement of sensory batteries in toilets, thanks to which we will save water (already done)

- space development project for electric cars
Due to our willingness to support our environment, we generated a station dedicated to electric cars (ALK parking) - 3 sockets + a project for the development of places for electric cars in cooperation with an external supplier.

- Solar systems, photovoltaics (we collect offers)
We are very much interested in using renewable energy sources. We have not implemented such solutions yet, but we are considering starting to use solar farms. We are considering introducing such installations on part of the roof. We don't pretend that we know everything. We often turn to experts in a given field for advice. We are currently collecting price offers from contractors. We do it wisely and by the regulations.

The Carbon Trust Standard recognizes organizations that follow best practice in measuring, managing and reducing their environmental impact. We are constantly raising the bar and we care for the common future of our mother Earth. That is why we are constantly looking for new opportunities to be more friendly to nature.

Kozminski University has in its educational basis subjects related to environmental protection and corporate social responsibility. We as a business school look at ecology in terms of responsibility and sustainable development and indicate real costs and profits from the use of ecological solutions.
