The CIASF is the interdisciplinary research unit of the Kozminski University. It was founded in April 2001 at initiative of Prof. Lech W. Zacher who serves as its Director. The Chairman of the Center’s Scientific Advisory Board Joseph F. Coates is the world-known futurist and one of funding fathers of technology assessment(TA).

The main activity of the Center is research on a broadly understood impact assessment (technological, environmental, political, organizational, social, psychological, international, global) and also futures studies (forecasting, foresight).

Some exemplary research topics:

  • Risk, dangers, disasters – model of analysis and management,
  • Non-economic dimensions of e-society,
  • From information society to knowledge society,
  • Perspectives and assessments of new radical technologies (ICTs, biotechnology, biomedicine etc.),
  • Socio-cultural sustainability in the age of the Internet and VR
  • Globalization – perspectives and multicriterial evalution of impacts,
  • The coming new world disorder – looking for solutions.

Within its activity the CIASF organizes scientific conferences, workshops and seminars, also publishes books and working papers.

The Center’s goalis also to produce and disseminate knowledge on impact assessment concepts, methods and procedures especially in the context of decision-making and management. Evaluative research is still not popular in Central and Eastern Europe. The same refers to prognostic research and future studies in general. Enhancing the impact – and future – orientation will make it possible to manage the problems of the ongoing transformations. Already the cumulated world experience should be transferred to CEE countries’ thinking, decision-making and acting – on the level of government, business and NGOs.

Thus the Center is active in didactic process within the Kozminski University offering courses and B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs, also in the field of consulting and expertise.

The Center has both international and network character. Its problematique is internationally oriented. Its cooperation span and foreign contacts are growing up.

The idea of the CIASF is also building of balanced Weltanschauung in international and global studies (i.a. evaluating the present “globalization project” and making scenarios of more “inclusive globalization”).  Thus the interdisciplinary approach (the members are sociologists, philosophers, engineers, economists et al.) and multipresentation of the world scientific community is needed in the Center’s attiude and works.

The CIASF cooperates with the Educational Foudation TRANSFORMATIONS in publishing the interdisciplinary journal “Transformacje”(in Polish and English). Currently the Center has initiated research on “Technology advancements, applications and their social impacts. There are a few groups of theorotic and practitioners: economists, engineers and medical doctors.

The CIASF team has elaborated the post-diploma program on the Managing EU Funds for Proecological Projects in Poland.

In the recent years the CIASF organized a few conferences, i.a. on crises and environment on democracy, on virtualization, on technology and sustainability. Monographies connected with these confernces were published.
