Communicative effectiveness management in highly-complex, dynamic task environment (07.07.2017-06.07.2020)

The aim of this project is to explore relationship between team communication patterns and team work effectiveness in a multi-level, highly-complex problem solving situation. The point of main interest here is how communication processes and behaviors formulate for effective and non-effective teams during Business Simulation Game play. Do successful and unsuccessful teams differ in terms of their communicative behaviors patterns?
Method employed in this project keeps focus on the continuity of observation, and thus, allows to track the "waving" of communication processes and their adaptive dynamics. Simulation data, video analyses by trained behavioral judges and questionnaire diagnostic tools allow to bring brighter picture of the researched situation and phenomena.

Izabela Koładkiewicz PhD with habilitation

Entrepreneurial Exit Planning Strategies and Conditioning Factors in Poland (13.02.217-12.02.2020)

The goal of the research is an attempt to identify and assess the phenomenon of entrepreneurial exit subject to Polish conditions, including:
• Identification of exit strategies planned by entrepreneurs (exit intentions) and condition defining factors, such as human capital and relational capital;
• Identification of needs in connection with the actual performance of the exit strategy;
• The building of the entrepreneur profile depending on declared intention of exiting.

Both quantitative and qualitative methods shall be used in the research. The primary source of data for the quantitative analyses shall be the results of questionnaire–based research conducted among a group of 300 entrepreneurs and active in the SME sector. The source of data for qualitative analyses shall be interviews conducted with a group of six–ten experts with experience in support for entrepreneurs in the process of exiting.

Professionalization of supervisory structures in the family business (06.12.2011 - 05.12.2014)

This study takes approaches. The first part includes the preparation of the model of progression for supervisory structures (family governance) in the family business, which is not listed based on the global practice of governance. The focus of this model will be on a board of directors / supervisory board - in terms of changes in its business as it grows more complex, as expressed by the family organization and the complexity of the family. The second part employs the case study approach to verify the first model built in polish conditions. A significant contribution of the research will in identifying factors determining the relevance of existing measures to ensure the continuation of family businesses.

Upon the verification of results, the research will be formally compiled as a “habilitation dissertation”. Thus, the results of a well-developed set of best practices for the operation of boards of directors / supervisory board in the family business resulting from foreign experience family business. Such a set of best practices can be useful in underscoring the Polish family businesses practices, not only to facilitate their further development and governance but above all to ensure their permanence.

Audit committee characteristics and financial reporting quality. Evidence from the Warsaw Stock Exchange (14.07.2016-13.07.2018)

Corporate governance reforms, among others, are aimed at increasing control mechanisms to decrease information asymmetry between opportunistic managers and investors and provide the highest quality of financial information to investors. As a result, two important developments have taken place: The actual formation of Audit Committees (ACs) and increased demands to deliver a better quality of external financial reporting. ACs evaluate the credibility and relevance of financial information in collaboration with external auditors, and in some larger organizations also internal auditors.
For a long time, business people, regulators, and researchers have discussed the characteristics of ACs in the context of board composition. The literature on corporate governance has acknowledged that the profile of board members (diversity), activity, and size may affect the way these boards function and their efficiency. However, the topic of AC characteristics has not been widely researched in the contexts of emerging capital markets and Central and Eastern Europe.
The Poland, the most recent version of the Code of Best Practice on the Warsaw Stock Exchange states that companies should be supervised by an effective and competent supervisory board, and that one of its roles is to issue opinions on a company’s performance (WSE, 2015). Additionally when drafting more detailed rules (recommendation II.R.2), the Code specifies that decisions makers responsible for supervisory board appointments need to ensure that the composition of the board is comprehensive and diverse in terms of gender, education, age, and professional experience, among others (WSE, 2015). At the same time, according to the Auditing Act (2009), the AC is required to have at least three members and at least one of them is expected to be independent and to have qualifications in accounting or auditing.
The aim of this research project is to investigate the link between specific characteristics of ACs (profile of its members, engagement, and size) and financial reporting quality (FRQ). This project aims to
contribute to the growing literature on corporate governance, and to focus on the impact of various characteristics on the ability of effective oversight of financial reporting quality. More specifically, the
project will examine the association between different characteristics of ACs using a sample of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In general, based on prior research and our own observations, we hypothesize that a better profile of AC members (assured diversity on the board), more active ACs, and bigger ACs in terms of size, will positively influence the quality of financial reporting.
Quantitative analysis will allow us to assess the association between AC characteristics and FRQ.Information on ACs’ characteristics will be hand collected and include such variables as number of
independent AC members, number of AC members with accounting and auditing expertise, number of experienced AC members, presence of women on ACs, number of AC meetings, and AC size.
However, the dependent variable (FRQ) is inherently unobservable. Consistent with prior literature we plan to use two different measures as proxies for FRQ: (1) earnings management, and (2) audit lag.
The sample used for the study consists of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. It is estimated that the sample will have a time horizon of 11 years, from 2005 to 2015, inclusive. The structure of the data determines the use of the dynamic panel models to verify our hypotheses.
There are two reasons why this project can be valuable:
Poland is an interesting case to study, as the country lags behind other countries in the European Union in reaching gender balance on boards, for instance. It is expected that the results of this effort may be useful to policymakers, who can verify the usefulness of policies related to the promotion of diversity on supervisory boards as prescribed in the Code of Best Practice on the WSE 2016 and motivate regulators to take still more action to promote more balanced diversity and also to promote a higher level of activity and size of supervisory boards and audit committees in Poland. The research may also provide additional insight to policymakers on the importance of diversity to ensure more effective monitoring and better financial reporting quality overall.
This research project also offers a potential contribution to the literature by providing further insights into the specific aspect of board diversity and its link to financial reporting quality in a setting outside the usually widely researched Anglo-Saxon corporate governance model by focusing on the Polish capital market, which has not been explored in depth. The Polish capital market can be described as emerging and can be characterised by significant ownership concentration, lower levels of protection for minority shareholders, and a stronger presence of block holders. In such a setting, the specific features of its corporate governance system may affect board efficiency, and especially audit committee efficiency, and their ability to oversee an auditor’s work. This effort may also have implications related to financial reporting quality and, as a result, to the quality of financial reporting.

Reform of corporate governance. The experience of the auditors (13.06.2011 - 12.06.2014)

The research project refers to a gap existing in the world literature throughout an analysis of experiences of auditors with reforms of the corporate order in Poland and in the US. 

The scientific goal of the project is: 

  • Analysis of auditor experiences related to the reforms of the corporate order in Poland and in US,
  • Description of cooperation practices and differences between US and Poland, 
  • Identification of factors that affect the quality of cooperation between auditors and the Board of Directors, 
  • Collection of information on growth of the capital market in Poland, 
  • Preparation of recommendation presenting the optimal model of cooperation between the Board of Directors and an auditor.

Confronting the experiences of the auditors operating on a developed market with the last experiences of the auditors in Poland will let to get knowledge on a position of an auditor in effective system of the corporate order.  Thus, it will enable to define the directions of the future reforms that could improve the cooperation between an auditor and the Board of Directors. The practical result of  the project will be presenting the recommendations (best practices) related to the cooperation between the Audit Committee and an auditor.

Measurement and communication of performance in higher education sector. A comparative study of Poland and Nordic countries. (14.07.2016-13.07.2019)

The goal of this research is to explore the effects of changes in the performance measurement systems at national, organizational and individual levels as a result of the external forces and internal challenges in universities in Poland and three Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, and Sweden) characterized by managerial vs. academic logics.
The universities are a very interesting research context that during the last decades has implemented several reforms and changes. Since the performance of universities is very often directly linked with funds allocated to a university, many universities spend considerable resources on the development of specific tools allowing them to measure the performance of faculties, departments, and individual employees in terms or research and teaching outputs. Traditionally the performance measurement had a more developmental role and it was intended at helping individuals to improve performance in the future periods. However, there has been a shift to more quantitative and judgemental approach when evaluation is based in great deal the quantitative evaluation of the past performance.
There is a growing international literature on the topic of measuring and communicating university performance related to Western and Nordic countries, as most these countries has been exposed to several governance and management reforms since the Nineties.
There is still a lack of literature and research related to Central Eastern countries and comparative studies on these issues. Compared to the previous contributions, our research project will be based on multi-theoretical framework can be useful in a specific context of public or private universities in order to understand the objectives of control, managerial intentions, and employee perceptions at different organizational levels. The further peculiarity of our research project is the method as it will be executed using a comparative country cases (Poland and three Nordic countries) and multiple case studies (one private and two public universities in each country) approach that employs several qualitative methods (as archival data collection and semistructured interviews).
The research project will be developed by using qualitative research methods and sources and will consist of seven phases that will be executed in 36 months. The first phase is devoted to the literature review and the theoretical basis for the research. In the second and third phases, will be conducted and related to the Polish university context at national, organizational and individual level. The fourth and fifth phases will be related to the country cases of Nordic universities. The sixth phase will be focus on merging and comparing the scientific results of the Poland with the three Nordic countries. The last phase will related to dissemination of the results to national and international conferences, and submission to international scientific journals in different business areas (accounting, public management and educations studies).
The research project is expected to produce both academic and non-academic outputs thus reaching both types of correspondent audience.
The academic outputs of this research project are to be published in international and high-quality journals as co-authored articles by the members of the research team. The outputs are applicable to other research concerning universities in Poland and other Central-Eastern European countries.
The non-academic outputs will be related to the management and governance of public or private universities and in policy planning. The knowledge that will be created by this research project will be useful for different stakeholders, such as policy-makers, trade unions, third-sector representatives, citizens, regulators and other interest groups to develop strategies and discover ways to improve performance of higher education sector and institutions.

Development of Bounded Leadership Model (21.07.2015-20.07.2018)

The main research goal of the project is development of a Bounded Leadership Theory among corporate managers and entrepreneurial managers based on guidelines provided by the latest researches of professor Koźmiński (2013) in this extent. The following research issues are subject of the project: How competences affect power of leadership? What impact on the leadership power has awareness of barriers and ability to overcome them? What factors are crucial in the field of vercoming barriers? What limits in the groups included in the survey are the hardest and the simplest to overcome?

Management of insecurity and trust in cooperation between enterprises (15.09.2010 -14.03.2014)

The aim of the project is to research the coordination of international high-tech projects executed by the companies deriving from cultures of low (Poland) and high (USA) degree of generalized trust and social capital. The differences in the level of generalized trust have substantial impact on the way cooperation among companies is managed, particularly when the cooperating companies derive from different cultural contexts and additionally there is no possibility of basing their relations on personal trust developed on the ground of interpersonal contacts. Despite commonly acclaimed values of trust, the contemporary literature reports that in practice we tend to implement alternative methods of coordination of cooperation. The project will contain the practices of coordination of cooperation among enterprises in the high-tech sector (type B+R cooperation, outsourcing of services or IT products development).

The project is innovative because of its unique cross-cultural implementation and because of an applied qualitative research method allowing for the observation of real ways of coping with insecurity.

Self-employment from Polish and international perspective (15.06.2016-14.06.2018)

The main objective of the Project is to contribute to better understanding of the self-employment phenomenon, i.e. conducting economic activity without employees. Self-employment plays important role in the Polish economy and such role will grow parallel with the socio-economic progress. The population of self-employed is diversified with differentiating impact of particular segments on socio-economic development.
A comparative analysis will be carried out of the trends in self-employment in Poland as compared with those prevailing in other developed countries, particularly Netherlands and Germany. Particular focus will be placed on the diversification of self-employment sector and its key characteristics like demographic factors, occupational status, motivation and growth aspirations as well as industry in which self-employed operate.
Research shall contribute to better understanding of the self-employment phenomenon in the context of increasing role of the “intermediate zone” between employment and running an employer firm in the modern economy. We shall contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing a deeper insight into the internal diversification of the population of self-employed.

The perception of sharing: professional culture study of lawyers (03.06.2016-02.06.2018)

The objective of this project is to analyze and understand the perceptions of fairness in sharing digital
media files, as well as the visions of the future of copyright and piracy, in the eyes of an occupational group most highly skilled in law: professional lawyers. This group is particularly useful for the study of understanding the social changes in perceiving file sharing, since they know well the current legal constraints, they have high professional ethical standards of conduct, they are rarely under major financial pressure, and thus their contribution to understanding the problem may be useful both in terms of better realizing the social change itself, and in terms of possible future developments in this area. As the project aims not to be constrained by the views of representatives of just one national culture, and as it intends to study the problem from the perspective of the most legally qualified international elite, it will focus on Harvard LL.M. program participants.
The project will seek answers to the following research questions:
• How do lawyers perceive the digital environment? Is digital files sharing (depending on the tech used) understood as lending or multiplying a good? Do any social contexts allow for natural asking for file sharing, as well as for offering it? Does the convenience of copying influence the practice of sharing?
• What factors influence perceiving files sharing as fair or not? With whom sharing of digital media is perceived as more fair and why? Are some kinds of files perceived as more fair to share than others? Does the date of original publication matter? To what extent does the technology used for sharing determine the perceived fairness? Does the nationality of the author matter?
• How are the consequences of file sharing perceived and enacted? How is refusing to share perceived and what reasons are considered more valid than the others? In which sharing contexts (private, public, digital/material, within social networks and outside of them, etc.) is legal status of the action important and how is it enacted?
The research is going to be ethnographic. This means that it will mainly rely on observations and interviews. The chosen methods are particularly useful for studying new, emerging social phenomena, and thus are particularly well suiting the chosen topic. Also, it should be noted that due to the very sensitive nature of the topic (potentially related to law violations, even if widely perceived as acceptable) the choice of ethnographic approach is the only possibility, just conducting random qualitative interviews would not suffice.
The proposed topic has high significance, and it explores new, under-researched social phenomena,
which have major impact on many organizations and societies. The area of copyright, intellectual and digital (non-material) goods redistribution seems to be one of the key challenges for the society in general, and management and organization science in particular, in the very near future. This is so because the very notions of ownership, value, and of fairness in sharing non-material goods (very low marginal costs, lack of entry barriers, low communications and search costs, reduced informational asymmetries) are being redefined.
In fact, there is already a wide social acceptance of copying digital files. Yet, the social perception of
sharing of digital media has a far more reaching consequences than media: We are on the verge of a massive technological revolution related to 3D printing. When the material production and distribution will not be playing a major part in the organizational value chain, a question how are the digital files perceived is really just as crucial for production companies, as it is for the media ones.
As a result of an analysis of an international group of professional, outstanding lawyers, it will be possible to delve into the emerging social logic of what is fair and acceptable in media and digital files sharing.
Apart from an obvious academic value (discovering a new phenomenon from an unexplored angle) the outcomes may also have some practical value: they may help adjust the business models to social expectations, as well as have direct influence on the development of civilization, economy, and society.

Cultural norms and social organization in open collaboration communities (29.01.2013 - 28.01.2018)

Since there are apparent differences between the open collaboration projects and other forms of organization, and also since there are differences within the open collaboration communities, between the expert driven (e.g. FLOSS) and the non-expert ones (Wikipedia), there is an emerging research field, which so far has not been sufficiently delved into by researchers. The objective of the project, therefore, is to create a qualitative, interpretive analysis of organizational practices in non-expert open collaboration communities, on the example of three different Wikipedia projects (from different countries), and
Twitter/Blip and Pinterest.

The proposed project is interpretive (Burrell i Morgan, 1979)and performative (Latour, 1986; Jemielniak, 2002), which means that it does not rely on the pre-conceptualized hypotheses. Similarly to grounded theory method (Glaser i Strauss, 1967; Glaser, 1978; Konecki, 2000), but reling on an ethnographic approach (Schwartzman, 1993; Atkinson, 2001; Denzin i Lincoln, 2003; Madison, 2005; Kostera, 2007), the study starts with a set of initial research questions: how do members of non-expert open collaboration projects enact hierarchy, status, leadership, motivation, procedures, authority, and conflict trajectories, in an a-hierarchical environment?

Intercultural analysis of knowledge intensive work. Case of professionals in law (30.05.2011 - 29.07.2013)

The aim of the project is an international, comparative analysis of knowledge intensive work illustrated with an example of lawyers from US and Poland. The project will be implemented in cooperation and for invitation of the Harvard University as well as the Cornell University. 

The basic empirical research question is: what are the cultural differences and similarities in organizational and managerial practices performed in the environment of the knowledge intensive work among the lawyers.

Factors that promote specific design of gamified systems for managing employee Motivation ( 11.07.2017-10.07.2018)

Main goal of following project is defining how to stimulate employee engagement. Project aim is to deeper current knowledge about gamification design by researching how gamification designer are executing their knowledge and skills. Gamification is the use of game elements and game mechanics in non-game contexts.
Research problem in the project is change of employee engagement while their repetitive work in IT environment. Research will focus on constructing multiple case study of gamification designer perspectives and reception of gamification solution by employees.
Due to applied methodology results of the project will have double influence on development of work environment. First effect is addition to the knowledge base connected with the problem and its solution. Results of the project may be good starting point for further research of employee engagement, building of management information systems or use of gamification in management.

Organizational means of dealing with tension between gift economy and market logic based on the example of CouchSurfing (17.02.2014 -16.06.2016)

Research project objectives/ Research hypothesis

The focus of the research project will be on the growing phenomenon of virtual organizations offering accomodation - payable or for free, offering "a place on a couch' or whole houses / flats. Popularity of such organizations has been growing rapidly within the last years. Growth and dissemination of the hospitality exchange networks enable creation of a new field of interdisciplinary analysis. Hospitality exchange networks are a type of open collaboration movements (Aigrain, 2012; Benkler, 2006; Hofmokl, 2009; Ostrom & Hess, 2007; Shirky, 2008), nonetheless, they have not been sufficiently investigated from this point of view, unlike other peer production organizations, e.g. Wikipedia, which are subject of numerous studies (see e.g. Ayers, Matthews, & Yates, 2008; O’Sullivan, 2009; Reagle, 2010). Yet, they are particularly interesting for the field of organization and management science, since they are in the avant-garde of conflicting logics of market and gift economy – and may signal a major social change of influence far beyond tourism: the goods traditionally perceived as individual and private (as one’s home) are becoming common and public. A qualitative analysis of organizational culture and behaviors of social actors in a situation of conflicting orders of market and gift economy in virtual hospitality networks in world literature from the field of organization theory and management. An organizational analysis of CouchSurfing (CS), currently the most important network, which has changed its character from for-profit to non-profit (supplemented by some additional analysis of BeWelcome, which has remained an NGO) may help fill this gap. The aim of the project is to provide a description and interpretation of hospitality exchange networks such as CS, focusing especially on the tension between market logic of a service unergoing commercialization and gift economy (Mauss, 1954), on which the culture of the network seems to be based, and its consequences for the functioning and public reception (Glaeser & Shleifer, 2001; Weisbrod, 1998). The researcher is interested in the mutual influences between the micro and macro level of the organization - in the issue, how official organizational culture (Hatch, 1993; Schein, 2004; Smircich, 1983) influences the interactions between individuals and the way they negotiate their meetings (Strauss, 1978) and how the interactions on micro-level may affect this very organizational culture. Since "offline" meetings of the users may pose a threat for its participants (to life, health, threat of property theft or simply feeling of discomfort), second important issue will be the formalization and bureaucratization of the organization, especially in the context of providing institutional framework for the meetings and increasing trust amongst users. This issue leads us to thinking about strategies, which are chosen by the portals in this respect (Obłoj 1998, Porter, 2001) as well as individual strategies of the networks' users. We can ask, whether particular networks recognize each other as competition, if they become more similar to each other or if they tend to fill specific niches - thus, if they become a cohrent organizational field (DiMaggio & Powell, 1983).

Research project methodology

Research is based mainly on qualitative methodology (supplemented by a quantitative analysis). The very character of the organization, in which "online meetings" have their continuation in the form of "offline" ones, which entails in combining methods of traditional ethnography (e.g. Kostera, 2003) with virtual ethnography (Beneito-Montagut, 2011; Coleman, 2010; Garcia, Standlee, & Bechkoff, 2009; Gatson & Zweerink, 2004; Hine, 2000). So-called netnography enables observations of a much broader group than in the case of direct observation. This methodology fits the multi-sited ethnography approach as well (Marcus, 1995). The proposed theoretical tools stem from many sub-disciplines of social sciences due to the complexity of the investigated phemonena. Project is based on the paradigm of social construction of reality (Berger & Luckmann, 1966) and negotiation of the social order (Strauss, 1978) and on concepts from the field of symbolic-interpretive paradigm of organization theory (Hatch, 1997). In addition, useful will be concepts from the field of economic anthropology (e.g. Polanyi, 1944) and sociology (e.g. Granovetter, 1983, 1985; Zelizer, 2005, 2006) and literature concerning social ties, especially in relation to capitalist economy (Illouz, 2009; Maffesoli, 1996, 2008 etc.) and network society Because of the character of the investigated organization, references to theoretical approaches towards networks (Castells, 1997, 2007, 2009) and especially open collaboration (Botsman 2012; Benkler 2006; Sacks 2011) and Web 2.0 users as prosumers (Ritzer & Jurgenson, 2010) will be taken into account.

Expected impact of the research project on the development of science, civilization and society

The proposed research topic is very important at two levels: at the basic level of increasing knowledge of virtual organizations (open  collaboration and hospitality exchange networks) in the field of organization and management studies, especially from the perspective of  qualitative approach towards culture and organizational rhetoric (Hatch, 1993; Schein, 2004; Smircich, 1983) and strategies of identity building, which haven't been sufficiently studied; as well as at the general level, which is the functioning of an organization based on alternative economic logic (Benkler, 2006). The results of the study will contribute to filling the gap in research on virtual communities, amonst which hospitality exchange networks have not been studied extensively. What is more, in the management and organization science gift economy is studied only very rarely. The current situation, in which Couchsurfing has found itself enables a unique inquiry into a situation of organization change.

The influence of word of mouth on desicion making process (25.06.2013 - 24.06.2016)

The research objective of the project is to identify WOM communication mechanism, evaluate the influence of informal communication on the process of purchase decision making by both individual and institutional buyers in the online and offline environment, as well as to analyse methods chosen by enterprises to stimulate the emergence of informational communication.

Despite many publications focused on word-of-mouth communication there are no attempts aimed at comprehensive description of the WOM communication mechanism, including its determinants, as well as indication to what extent such communication influences purchase decision making. Besides, there is no thorough research in this area in polish market. Terminology related to the use of word of mouth communication for marketing purposes should be put in order and clarified.

The research project presented hereby is aimed at filling the above defined knowledge gaps.

The qualitative characteristics of financial information and investor behaviour (02.08.2012 - 01.08.2015)

The goal of this research project is to create a unique set of methods in the area of qualitative characteristics of financialinformation and their impact on investor decisions. The main hypothesis states that these qualitative characteristicssignificantly affect investor decisions, when compared to decisions made on the basis of quantitative information.However, this relationship is conditioned by the cultural background of the investor. The research team will study textscreated and published by corporations listed at the WSE or by the analysts that follow these companies. The study willlead to the development of a method for the analsis of financial texts in the Polish language in terms of their qualitativecharacteristics including tone, certainty, detail, readability. This method will then be used to study the effect of thosecharacteristics on investor behavior. The project offers a novel contribution to finance by combining methods used inlinguistics and finance, which lead to the creation of a new research method compatible with the Polish culture.

Improvement capability of organization, which is moderately error sensitive (26.06.2013 -25.06.2015)

Research project objectives/ Research hypothesis

The ability to improve can be a means to gain a competitive advantage, but first of all it is a requirement to escape from weaknesses interfering the regular operation of organization.
Object of the study: the organization's ability to improve and factors affecting the capability.
The study will be conducted in selected small units of organizations recognized as moderately sensitive to errors. They are specific by a moderate level of severity of typical consequences of common human errors. Consequently, ensuring the efficiency of the operation depends to a much greater extent on efficient organization, rather than on expensive technical equipment.

System barriers prevent human errors in the organization of "average sensitive to errors" (The project was completed and closed in the year 2012)

Despite the fact that the negative consequences of human error have been massively documented, and evidentially known or well understood, the problem of human error has yet to be resolved, either here in Poland or elsewhere. Due to the substantial negative consequences of human error and its impact on an overall organisation, several researchers have drawn their attention to this particular research field, which is significantly represented in the literature. The main research activity focuses on the problems of systems "vulnerable to errors," such as health care, nuclear power, transport, etc. The high intolerance for error is usually accompanied by readiness to take all necessary costs of prevention.

Organizations that are less vulnerable to errors are not justified not to take action at all costs to the pursuit of reducing risk of human error. The solutions are primarily aimed at system compliance with ISO 9001 and risk analysis tools such as FMEA method or technique to organize the work environment such as 5S scheme. The problem is that the practice of their application in many organizations leaves little to be desired. There are reasons to believe that it is impossible to completely eliminate human error. There are also reasons to believe that the causes of human error does not lie exclusively with the man who makes a mistake.

Processes of acquiring and updating knowledge in born global companies (27.12.2011 - 26.12.2013)

The aim of the research is to analyze a relationship between the processes of acquiring and updating knowledge about the environment of born global companies and their financial results. The born global companies have difficulties In gathering knowledge due to their strategy of rapid international expansion and limited resources. Earlier research show (Knight, 2004) that the efficient acquisition of knowledge is a key factor for the success of organization. 

The research project has double meaning. Firstly, there is a gap of knowledge in the literature concerning this issue. Most of the researchers focused merely on the analysis of the sources of information gathered by born global. Secondly, the number of born global companies has been growing over the decade. The spread of phenomena is connected with the development of communication technologies, international integration and the effect of shinking borders between countries. The development of born globals in the country is important for the economy, because Polish companies, in comparison to the European ones, are perceived as less innovative and do not have enough experience In commercialization of products. Most of born globals are form high-tech sector and they sell on the market innovative products and technologies. The recognition of effective processes of acquiring knowledge is also important for development of Polish business.

Resolving public disputes and organizational and social learning (08.12.2011 - 07.12.2013)

Evaluating the efficiency of public dispute resolution, or conflicts, which are party administration, citizens' groups and business organizations generally relate to methods and tools, with particular emphasis on negotiation, mediation and quasi-judicial procedures. The prospect of such studies is the most practical short-term and the goal is to design better ways of resolving conflicts.

The main objective of the proposed project is to identify changes in the perception of conflicts and ways of solving them against the experience of stakeholders and participants in the learning process of public disputes. Interest in the study will be completed no longer disputes and their participants.

In Poland, there is a lack of analysis of the impact of conflicts and ways of solving the economic organizations, institutions of public life, including both the authorities and public administration (local and central government) as well as citizens and social organizations. 

Research are part of the basic questions about the public sphere of management performance, in which economic factors are strongly mixed with social, legal and political. At the same time the word efficiency is, according to tradition praxeological, understand as effectiveness but also their economy and favourability in different dimensions. One important dimension of this performance is the real impact of dispute resolution to expand the scope of participation of citizens in public life and the exercise of power or influence on democracy.

The socio-economic reality becomes increasingly important issue of efficient management decision-making on matters of dispute, controversy. Examples are decisions about closing schools, the location of polluting the environment and residents of investments (eg landfills, sorting, incineration), as well as trends in public expenditure. The reason may be differences in the positions of both interests and values which guided the people and organizations. The challenge is therefore to carry out the decision making process that takes into account the aforementioned diversity and allow the investigation to solutions through deliberation. It appears that in the absence of common values and what might pro vide the legitimacy of certain decisions is not the contents, but the procedure, within which they were taken.

Thus, examination of decision-making is central to research on the processes of modern society create legitimacy for a changing institutional order. The answer to the question of the extent to which local Polish institutions are able to adapt to these challenges, here is how to extend the learning processes of dispute resolution procedures it becomes a question of to what extent they are able to generate public trust and legitimacy for their activities.

Research practices of the anthropologic business consultants (27.05.2011 - 26.11.2013)

The project refers to the activities of business anthropologists, which is a specific group of the knowledge workers. In Poland, the group has just started to form, yet in the US, it is well developed, with a long history dating back from 20th century.

The scientific goal of the project is mapping a cultural formation of business practitioners who build their professional identity referring to social and cultural anthropology. The research results should stimulate thoughts on the recent research practices of business anthropologist and consequently contribute to the knowledge improvement in the area of a reinforcing function of quality research management. The other important research results that confirms their significance is an expected impact of the research results on changes in designing the teaching programs in higher education institutions in Poland. The conclusions may contribute to improved design of teaching programs. This refers to faculties that educate people whose task is to put into practice the most recent achievements in given scientific disciplines.

Alliances Strategy as a way to Polish firms’ development in Technology and knowledgeintensive sectors: Intercultural Cooperation.

The main purpose of the project is to explore ties between Polish and foreign firms. The study will focus on companies as well as Research&Development units in which the investment in technology and innovation are significant.
The project is also a kind of introduction to more advanced, complex and long-term research project which start is planned after defending of author’s doctoral thesis.
Important another purpose is thus the construction of research framework that will be use in further research projects.

The main aim of the work is to prove that in the global sector, such as the telecommunications sector, alliance formation is one of the most successful strategies to win competitive advantage. This is usually through acquisition of skills and resources that are difficult to acquire and subsequently providing a mechanism influencing the evolution of market sectors.
